Harold and Ellie have always lived in their Yorkshire seaside town, but now World War II has come between them.

Although Ellie remained in Yorkshire, enlisting in the ATS, Harold’s experiences in the Dunkirk evacuation and subsequent imprisonment in Italy have resulted in years of hardship. Considering the German occupation of Italy following the armistice, should Harold risk an escape to the mountains in search of freedom? Can he and Bernie reach the safety of Bruno Galante’s farm undetected?

Six years of warfare has irrevocably damaged their relationship. Harold sadly accepts that he may have lost Ellie forever. One thing is for certain: if they met again, would she be the person he once knew, and would she still love him? He doubts it; it’s been too long and – in any case – where is she now?
